Learning & Pedagogy

At Laurieston Day Nursery we are proud of our approach to children's learning and we continue to inform and challenge ourselves, the educators, to make sure that the curriculum is exciting, engaging and relevant.  As the Head of Nursery, I am influenced by my many years of delivering ELCC and in the study and professional application of early years education.  We consider a variety of theorists when developing our approaches with our children and are influenced by Loris Malaguzzi and the Reggio Emilia approach to early learning.  This knowledge was further cemented by a study trip to Reggio Emilia with Learning Teaching Scotland many years ago.  At Laurieston we are using the approaches of Fredrich Froebel in particular to develop our setting and the children's experiences. This approach supports children to appreciate the natural world, learn through hands on, real, everyday experiences using natural resources, real world play objects and outdoor learning.  You will see this in the rich open-ended resources that the children use such as real tools in our woodwork area, porcelain and fragile resources in our home corner and in the creative experiences offered to children on a daily basis. Our Educators will facilitate children in their creative journey using both the indoor and outdoor environment and through sensitive interactions and thoughtful observations that ensure all children reach their potential.

The application of a strong pedagogy will support our children to experience the early level curriculum for excellence.  Pedagogy is about the interactions and experiences which support the curriculum and the process of how children learn. This is inseparable from what young children should learn - the content of the curriculum.
